I think sakana labs made an incorrect claim; they mis-categorized the fugu. despite it is a device of orchestration, they preferred to categorize it as an LLM.

That generated a distrust, of course. Thinking with the last years false AI scientist claim, AI Safety people are questioning the credibility of Sakana Labs, as whole.

Fugu is considered an orchestration method because its main job is coordination, not creation. It determines which external LLM should handle coding, which one should do the math, and which one should double-check the work. By acting as a router and a bridge between multiple different models, Fugu combines their individu[1]" based on what it learned during training.

Sakana Fugu is not this kind of individual expert. It does not write answers using its own traine[1]d knowledge. Instead, Fugu is like a smart project manager or a conductor. When you give Fugu a task, it d[1]oes not do the writing or calculating itself; rather, it uses a software method to break your task into smaller parts and assign them to the best-suited LLMs available on the market.

AI users typically have to choose one specific model—such as ChatGPT or Gemini—and rely on it to handle every task. Sakana AI has introduced a new tool called Sakana Fugu that works differently. Instead of being a single, massive AI model, Fugu acts like a smart team manager. It connects to several different top AI models at the same time, allowing users to access a whole team of AI tools through one single, simple connection.

When you ask Fugu a question or give it a task, it acts like a project manager. It looks at your request, breaks it down, and decides which specialized AI model is best suited for each part of the job. For instance, it might send a coding task to one AI, a math problem to another, and then ask a third AI to double-check the work. Fugu then combines all of their contributions into one single, high-quality answer for the user.

This approach is particularly helpful for complex, multi-step projects like programming or deep research, where different steps require different skills. By coordinating multiple models, Fugu can deliver strong results without relying on any single AI provider. This gives users more flexibility and helps them tackle difficult tasks more reliably without having to manage multiple different AI accounts themselves.
